Celebrating Christmas: A Time for Joy at Work

The Christmas season brings joy not only within families but also in the workplace. Employees eagerly anticipate the surprises their employers have in store, while companies seize this opportunity to enhance motivation and loyalty among their teams. According to a recent survey by BestJobs, a leading recruitment platform in Romania, nearly 32% of businesses plan to provide cash bonuses to their staff this year. Additionally, 20% will offer gift vouchers, and around 15.5% intend to reward employees with holiday-themed products, based on responses from 366 small, medium, and large companies across the country.

Company Celebrations and Activities

Moreover, three out of five employers are organizing company Christmas parties, creating a chance for teams to unwind and enjoy themselves. Other festive activities include decorating the office Christmas tree together (35%) and participating in themed workshops for making ornaments or holiday cookies (19.5%). As part of their rewards, nearly 10% of employers are providing gifts for employees’ children, and a similar percentage plans to offer additional days off during the holiday season, as indicated by the BestJobs survey. Furthermore, one-third of employers encourage their staff to engage in Secret Santa activities, particularly common in smaller firms or at the departmental level in larger corporations.

Employee Preferences for Holiday Benefits

On the employee side, a significant majority (58%) prefer monetary benefits, such as bonuses, while 24% express a desire for more time off during the holidays to spend with family and friends. Although Christmas parties remain a staple in many companies, interest in this type of benefit has waned; only 4% of respondents consider the holiday party a priority.

Holiday Benefits: A Closer Look

This year, employees from 36.6% of companies participating in the BestJobs survey will receive holiday benefits capped at 500 lei, which encompasses all rewards provided by employers. In another 7.7% of firms, benefits will range from 500 to 1,000 lei, while only 11.3% of employers are more generous, planning bonuses and holiday perks exceeding 1,000 lei. Conversely, 14.1% of companies will offer rewards of no more than 100 lei.

Equitable Distribution of Holiday Rewards

The good news is that 23.2% of companies will grant holiday benefits to all employees, regardless of the company’s financial performance this year. Meanwhile, 21.1% of employers determine the value of benefits based on the company’s growth and profits. However, half of the employers indicate that the benefits planned for this year will be similar to those of the previous year, with only 14% of companies reducing their Christmas bonus budget in 2018.
