Marius Şumudică’s Future: A Balancing Act Between Saudi Offers and Turkish Success

On Monday morning, Marius Şumudică, the head coach of Gazişehir Gaziantep, revealed that he has received two lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia. However, he expressed a strong preference to continue his journey in the Turkish league, where his achievements have garnered increasing recognition.

Impressive Performance in Turkey

Since taking the helm at Gazişehir Gaziantep at the start of the current season, Şumudică has propelled the team to an impressive third place in the league standings. His successful track record has attracted interest from Saudi Arabian clubs, a region where he has previously worked.

„I share the same manager as Cosmin Olăroiu. Currently, I have two offers from Saudi Arabia. (In response to a question about a potential salary of two million euros) You can always negotiate! There is a release clause in my contract, but I feel a strong obligation to the players I’ve developed. Leaving now would feel like a betrayal. The financial dealings here are very fair, and I have significant influence over aspects like nutrition, training facilities, and accommodation. It would be challenging to leave, even though the temptation is real; as they say, money can be quite alluring. At 48, I believe I still have time to explore that opportunity. While financial incentives are appealing, I’ve made a positive impact here. Shabab is currently facing significant challenges, and there are calls for my return. I lost the third place and a Champions League spot in the dying moments of the last match against Al Hilal,” Şumudică shared during an interview with DigiSport.

Aspirations for the National Team

In addition to discussing his club commitments, the coach, who previously led Astra Giurgiu to a national title in Romania, also touched on the possibility of taking charge of the national team. While he refrained from putting pressure on the current head coach, Cosmin Contra, Şumudică admitted that coaching the national team is a dream he harbors.

„It would be a significant opportunity for me, as I know how to foster a positive environment. Being a national coach is a tough role, and I’m not sure if I’m ready at this moment. I have immense respect for Contra, and I don’t want to undermine his efforts, especially with two crucial matches against the Faroe Islands and Norway on the horizon. Nonetheless, it’s a goal I aspire to achieve someday; it’s a dream for every player and coach. I came close as a player, but it never materialized,” he added.

Current Standing and Future Prospects

As of now, Marius Şumudică has secured 10 points in the first five matches of the Turkish top league, with Gazişehir Gaziantep firmly positioned in third place. Last season, he managed the Saudi team Al Shabab, further solidifying his international coaching credentials.
