USR Proposes Significant Amendments to the 2020 State Budget
The USR party has submitted over 60 amendments to the PNL Government regarding the 2020 state budget, focusing on reducing funding for certain scientific academies, increasing investments in education and infrastructure, enhancing institutional transparency, and promoting digitalization.
Critique of Scientific Academies
In their recent press release, USR expressed concerns about the allocation of funds to what they term „political academies” and positions that do not contribute meaningfully to the educational landscape. They argue that the financial support for the National Academy of Security Sciences and the Romanian Academy of Scientists is unwarranted. USR highlights that the reputation of the public education and research system has been severely tarnished by scandals involving plagiarism and fraudulent academic credentials. They assert that these academies represent a misuse of public funds and fail to enhance the quality of education and research.
Infrastructure Investment Proposals
The majority of USR’s amendments focus on boosting funding for infrastructure projects. Key proposals include an additional allocation of 160 million lei for the maintenance of road infrastructure, advance payments for the A1 Arad-Timișoara-DN 69 connection road, funding for a bridge over the Arieș River in Cluj County, a feasibility study for the expansion of Iași Airport, increased funding for the Bucharest-Brașov highway, and resources for rehabilitating the DN6 overpass in Bucharest’s ring road, as well as the bypass around Sighișoara.
Enhancing Educational Conditions
Furthermore, USR has put forth several amendments aimed at improving conditions within the education system. These include funding for seismic assessments of school buildings, resources to equip 400 public schools with sanitary facilities, and the expansion of pilot programs to hire speech therapists and counselors for students. These initiatives are designed to address pressing needs within the educational framework and ensure a safer, more supportive environment for learners.
