French actress Adele Haenel, who has publicly shared her experiences of „inappropriate touching” and „harassment” during her teenage years by director Christophe Ruggia, has officially filed a complaint against him, as announced by her legal representatives on Tuesday, according to AFP.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
The 30-year-old actress, a two-time César Award winner, arrived at the Central Office for the Suppression of Violence Against Persons (OCRVP) in Nanterre, near Paris, on Tuesday afternoon. She was there to provide testimony in an investigation initiated by the Paris Prosecutor’s Office concerning the allegations against Ruggia.
Details of the Complaint
In a statement from her lawyers, it was revealed that during this hearing, Haenel chose to file a complaint against Ruggia, with whom she worked on her debut film, „Les Diables,” when she was just 13 years old.
Public Revelations
A report released in early November by the news outlet Mediapart detailed Haenel’s claims regarding the „power” Ruggia exerted over her during the preparation and filming of the movie. She described „persistent sexual harassment,” repeated „touching,” and „forced kisses on the neck,” which allegedly occurred at Ruggia’s home and during various international film festivals when she was between 12 and 15 years old.
Systemic Issues Highlighted
Until now, Haenel had refrained from filing a complaint, expressing her disappointment over the „lack of convictions” in similar cases and condemning the „systemic violence against women in the judicial system.”
Prosecutor’s Initiative
Although no complaint had been filed initially, the Paris Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into „sexual assaults” against minors under 15 years of age „by individuals in positions of authority,” as well as for „sexual harassment,” shortly after the Mediapart report was published.
Commitment to Justice
In a statement, lawyers Anouck Michelin and Yann Le Bras emphasized that „should the investigative office request her involvement, Adele Haenel is committed to actively participating in this process, viewing it as her responsibility as a public figure to engage, given the seriousness of the reported actions and their implications for all parties involved.”
Ruggia’s Response
At the beginning of November, Christophe Ruggia, who has since been expelled from the French Society of Film Directors (SRF), denied any wrongdoing against Haenel. However, he later acknowledged that he „made the mistake of playing the role of Pygmalion, with the misunderstandings and obstacles that such a role entails.”
