At the recent American Music Awards (AMA) held in Los Angeles, Taylor Swift emerged as the standout star, being honored with the title of „Artist of the Decade.” This prestigious accolade was announced prior to the ceremony, and she also clinched the evening’s top honor, „Artist of the Year,” as reported by Press Association.
Overwhelmed with emotion while accepting the „Artist of the Year” award during the 47th edition of these awards, which have been celebrating musical talent since 1973, Swift reflected on the past year, describing it as filled with „some of the most incredible moments” alongside „the toughest challenges” she has faced in her life.
Recently, Swift found herself at the center of a controversy when executives from two record labels claimed she would not be allowed to perform her songs at the AMA. The 29-year-old artist took to her 85 million Twitter followers this month, seeking their support in a dispute over the rights to her music, accusing the label heads of exerting „tyrannical control” over her work. The executives, identified by Swift as Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun, also denied her the use of older recordings and concert footage for a Netflix documentary about her life.
„This industry is truly bizarre,” Swift remarked during the gala, expressing her gratitude to her fans.
In her acceptance speech, she moved many in the audience to tears, including her mother, Andrea, as she noted that the award symbolizes ten years of „hard work, artistry, fun, and memories.” „I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to do this,” she added.
In the „Artist of the Year” category, Swift faced competition from notable names such as Drake, Ariana Grande, Halsey, and Post Malone.
Having also won the „Artist of the Year” title the previous year, Swift treated her fans at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles to a medley of her greatest hits.
This year, Swift took home a total of six awards at the AMA, including „Best Pop/Rock Artist,” „Best Pop/Rock Album” for „Lover,” „Best Music Video” for „You Need to Calm Down,” and „Best Contemporary Artist.”
With this achievement, Swift has surpassed Michael Jackson’s record for the most AMA trophies, bringing her total to 29.
Billie Eilish was recognized as the „Best New Artist,” visibly emotional as she thanked her fans for this honor, which was her second award of the night after winning „Best Alternative Rock Artist.”
American rapper Post Malone, who led the nominations with seven categories, won the award for „Best Hip-Hop Album” for „Hollywood’s Bleeding.”
Pop artist Halsey took home the award for „Best Pop/Rock Song” with „Without Me,” while Carrie Underwood secured two awards for „Best Country Album” with „Cry Pretty” and „Best Country Artist.”
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello won „Collaboration of the Year” for their hit „Señorita,” and BTS was awarded „Tour of the Year.”
Khalid was named „Best Pop/Rock Artist,” also winning in the categories of „Best Soul/R&B Album” for „Free Spirit” and „Best Soul/R&B Song” for „Talk.”
Cardi B took home the award for „Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist,” while Bruno Mars was recognized as „Best Soul/R&B Artist,” and Beyoncé won „Best Soul/R&B Artist.”
J Balvin was awarded „Best Latin Artist,” and the iconic song „Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen was named „Best Soundtrack.”
Performers at the gala included Toni Braxton, celebrating 25 years since her first AMA win, along with Lizzo, Thomas Rhett, Camila Cabello & Shawn Mendes, Ozzy Osbourne, and Shania Twain.
Unlike the Grammy Awards, which are determined by industry experts, the AMA winners are decided through a public voting process among music consumers.
