New Commemorative Coins Celebrating Pope Francis’ Visit to Romania
On Thursday, May 30, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) will introduce a series of collectible gold and brass coins, alongside a brass coin intended for circulation, commemorating the Apostolic Visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Romania.

The gold coin’s obverse showcases images of significant places of worship along with the names of their respective locations: St. Joseph Cathedral in Bucharest, the Marian Sanctuary in Sumuleu Ciuc, the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Blaj, and the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Mary, Queen in Iași. These sites are set to be visited by Pope Francis. The design also includes the inscription „ROMANIA” in an arc, the year of issue „2019,” the Romanian coat of arms, and a nominal value of „500 LEI.”

It also includes the inscriptions „ROMANIA” and „2019,” the Romanian coat of arms, a nominal value of „50 BANI,” and the letter „N” within a circle, marking it as a collectible piece.
Brass Coin for Circulation
Similarly, the circulating brass coin displays the same religious landmarks and inscriptions as the collector’s version, with a nominal value of „50 BANI.” This coin will also be available for public use.
Common Reverse Design
All coins share a common reverse featuring the portrait and coat of arms of Pope Francis, along with the inscription „VIZITA APOSTOLICA A SANCTITATII SALE PAPA FRANCISC IN ROMANIA,” the visit dates „MAY 31 – JUNE 2,” and the motto „SA MERGEM IMPREUNA!”
