Sevilla vs. Barcelona: A Thrilling Copa del Rey Final Awaits
On Saturday, April 21, Sevilla and Barcelona, both recently eliminated from the Champions League, will clash in the final of this season’s Copa del Rey. The match is set to take place at Atletico Madrid’s new stadium, the Wanda Metropolitano, kicking off at 22:30.
Controversy Surrounding National Anthem
Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, has expressed that the final should be called off if Barcelona fans choose to boo the national anthem, as they have done in previous years, regardless of the presence of King Juan Carlos in the official balcony. He stated, „This is the Copa del Rey, not la Liga. I have always maintained that there should be consequences for such behavior, potentially leading to the match’s cancellation. While I’m not suggesting the anthem will be booed again, if the disrespect continues-as it has for the past four years-then Article 155 of the Constitution should be invoked at the Wanda Metropolitano. This would demonstrate our respect for national symbols during this time,” he told the Spanish press.
Match Preview: A Clash of Titans
The upcoming match promises to be exhilarating, with Barcelona and Sevilla averaging 3.5 goals in their last ten encounters. Out of these, Barcelona has triumphed in six, while Sevilla has managed to secure victory only once. Although Barcelona is poised to claim the La Liga title, Sevilla is currently struggling, having gone seven matches without a win. Furthermore, Barcelona has dominated the last three editions of the Copa del Rey, and online betting agency Unibet sees them as the clear favorites to secure their fourth consecutive trophy.
Historical Context: Previous Finals
This wouldn’t be the first time Barcelona has triumphed over Sevilla in a Copa del Rey final; they previously faced off in 2016, where Barcelona won 2-0 after extra time. Other notable victories for Barcelona in recent finals include Athletic Bilbao in 2015 and Alaves in 2017, showcasing their dominance in this prestigious tournament.
