Freelancing in Romania: A Growing Trend

In 2018, Romania stood out among European Union nations for its significant freelance workforce. Specifically, 17% of the Romanian labor force was engaged in freelance work, surpassing the EU average of 14%. The majority of these freelancers were involved in professional services, sales, and crafts.

Freelancer Statistics Across the EU

Across the EU, approximately 32.6 million individuals aged 15 to 74 were freelancers in 2018, representing 14% of the total workforce. Notably, a substantial majority of these freelancers-68%-were men.

Greece led the EU with the highest percentage of freelancers, where 30% of the workforce operated independently, meaning one in three individuals was a freelancer. Italy followed with 22% (one in five), while Poland and Romania recorded 18% and 17%, respectively. Other notable countries included the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Spain, each with 16%, and Portugal, Slovakia, and the UK, each at 15%.

Countries with the Lowest Freelance Participation

Conversely, the EU nations with the lowest proportions of freelancers in their labor force included Denmark and Luxembourg (both at 8%), followed by Germany and Sweden (9% each).

Popular Freelance Occupations

In 2018, the majority of freelancers were engaged in professional activities. Other common freelance roles included sales and services (16%), crafts (15%), skilled workers in agriculture, aquaculture, and forestry (14%), technicians (12%), and managers (12%). Collectively, these categories accounted for 90% of all freelancers.

Job Satisfaction Among Freelancers

Freelancers in Romania reported some of the lowest job satisfaction levels in Europe. In 2017, nearly half (48%) of freelancers across the EU expressed being „very satisfied” with their jobs, although this satisfaction varied significantly by country.

Countries like Sweden (83%), Malta (82%), and Denmark (81%) reported high satisfaction rates. In contrast, 21 other member states had satisfaction levels ranging from 30% to 70%. Alarmingly, in four countries, including Bulgaria (just under 30%), Portugal (29%), Cyprus (26%), and Romania (19%), fewer than 30% of freelancers reported being „very satisfied” with their work.

The Future of Freelancing and AI

Looking ahead, projections from the World Economic Forum suggest that by 2035, machines equipped with artificial intelligence will surpass humans in the workforce, leading to a rise in the number of freelancers compared to traditional employees.

According to Andreea Paul, president of the INACO think tank, „By 2025, AI-driven machines will perform more work than humans. The number of freelancers is expected to exceed that of employees by 2035, resulting in significant flexibility in work schedules and locations.”

Current data from the World Economic Forum indicates that in major industries, machines currently account for nearly 30% of working hours, with humans covering the remaining 70%. From 2019 to 2022, it is estimated that AI robots will handle about 42% of industrial work, although this percentage may vary by industry. For instance, in data processing, the role of robots is projected to increase from 46% in 2018 to 62% in 2022, while decision-making roles will rise from 18% to 27% during the same period.
