Major Crackdown on Counterfeit Perfumes by Transport Police
Authorities from the Transport Police have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against counterfeit goods. During a series of raids, including around 40 searches of packages and residences, they uncovered thousands of fake products.
Seizure of Counterfeit Fragrances
In total, law enforcement officials discovered over 3,700 bottles of toilet water and perfume that were falsely marketed as authentic products from well-known brands. These items were, in fact, counterfeit.
Origin and Distribution of Fake Products
Investigations revealed that these counterfeit fragrances originated from Turkey and were packaged in Romania. They were labeled with the names of popular brands and were intended for distribution in the UK for commercial sale.
Potential Financial Impact
If sold as genuine branded products, these counterfeit perfumes could have generated approximately €330,000 in revenue.
Legal Actions and Ongoing Investigations
A warrant has been executed to retrieve the counterfeit products, and the bottles have been confiscated for further investigation. Authorities have initiated a criminal case concerning the illegal distribution of products bearing identical or similar trademarks, as outlined in Law 84/1998 regarding trademarks and geographical indications.
Collaboration with Specialized Units
The S.I.A.S. operatives supported the team from the Bucharest Regional Transport Police, which operates under the direction of the Transport Police Directorate.
Future Steps in the Investigation
Investigations will continue to uncover all relevant details, with oversight from the Prosecutor’s Office near the Buftea Court.
The Widespread Issue of Counterfeit Fragrances
Millions of counterfeit perfumes are used by consumers across Europe, often without their knowledge of the potential risks involved. Merchants of fake fragrances exploit the route from China to Turkey and then to Romania, subsequently selling these products throughout Europe to profit from this illegal trade.
