O afacere iesita din traditie

Celebrating the International Day of the Blouse: A Journey of Tradition and Entrepreneurship
On June 24th, the world recognizes the International Day of the Blouse, and as part of the Romania Fast Forward campaign, we delve into a remarkable business that has brought our traditional blouses to the global stage. These garments are not only showcased at prestigious fashion shows but have also become coveted pieces among discerning women in the West. This venture thrives on craftsmanship and a commitment to tradition, eschewing conventional marketing strategies.
The Birth of a Passionate Enterprise
Sergiu Voicu – Journalist at Digi24: Today, we explore a unique business that many may not have considered-one that breathes new life into traditional Romanian blouses. We speak with Cristina Chiriac, the visionary behind this thriving enterprise. Cristina, how did this journey begin?
Cristina Chiriac – Entrepreneur: It all started when I randomly wore an old blouse that wasn’t even mine; it was torn. I vividly remember it was a Gorj blouse, and I was moderating a conference on female entrepreneurship. I noticed that instead of focusing on my speech, the women were captivated by my attire.
Nicoleta Munteanu – Ambassador and Entrepreneurship Mentor: From that moment, it was clear that Cristina needed to wear a blouse at every significant event. Why? Because the blouse energizes you.
From Collector to Entrepreneur
Cristina Chiriac – Entrepreneur: Initially, I just wanted to be a collector, acquiring as many vintage blouses as possible to wear at various events. My mother began reaching out to her friends, saying, „Cristina needs some blouses.” A family friend, Tanti Lica, who has known me since I was four, offered me around twenty blouses. They were long, traditional pieces, and I asked if I could alter them. She firmly advised against it, explaining that cutting a blouse is akin to tearing the soul from a body. Thus, I unintentionally became a collector, leaving with about fifteen traditional costumes. Over time, my collection grew to around 150 pieces. I don’t sew, nor am I an ethnographer or designer; I simply consider myself a passionate enthusiast who found a niche.
Cristina has built a business around her love for these garments, aiming to keep Romanian roots alive.
Cătălin Orezeanu – Artistic Director: There’s a certain magnetism about her. It may sound grand, but she has an incredible ability to draw people to her.
Reviving Tradition and Creating Opportunities
Cristina Chiriac – Entrepreneur: Today, we represent the largest workforce in this sector in Romania, collaborating with over 40 women.
In Ponoarele, Mehedinți County, Oana Pîrvan is one of the many talented artisans dedicated to preserving this generational craft and is part of Cristina’s project.
Oana Pîrvan – Master Artisan, Blouse Creator: I learned everything I know from my grandmother and mother. After finishing university, I created a traditional costume for myself.
Her passion for sewing led her to leave a career in music and a desk job to join this unconventional business.
Oana Pîrvan – Master Artisan, Blouse Creator: This venture creates jobs and keeps our community thriving. Mothers no longer have to seek work abroad.
Handcrafted Excellence
Cristina Chiriac – Entrepreneur: Everything we produce is handmade.
Interviewer: Are there other businesses doing the same?
Cristina Chiriac – Entrepreneur: No, what we do is unique in Romania.
Wearing Tradition with Pride
Simona Nicolaescu – Entrepreneur: When I wear a blouse, I feel connected to Romanian history, from the Dacians to the present. It’s like carrying the spirit of our ancestors, no matter where I am in the world.
Nicoleta Munteanu – Ambassador and Entrepreneurship Mentor: I’ve worn the blouse with pride in America, India, Jordan, the Maldives, and even Zanzibar.
Simona Nicolaescu – Entrepreneur: I’ve traveled extensively and always pack a few blouses. One of my most memorable experiences was in Mexico, where people still appreciate handmade items. They would stop me, asking where I was from and admiring the craftsmanship.
„When I wear a blouse, I’m not just showcasing our traditions; I’m also wearing the labor of someone who spent weeks or even a month creating it,” says Simona Nicolaescu. We often keep our beautiful heritage hidden away; it’s time to share it with the world!
Every Blouse Tells a Story
Each blouse carries a narrative, having been worn during significant life events, whether weddings or other milestones. Just as compelling as the story of the traditional costume is Cristina’s own life journey.
Cristina Chiriac – Entrepreneur: My only inheritance was the education I received, the values instilled in me. I left Câmpulung Muscel for Bucharest against my parents’ wishes. I graduated, while they hoped I would return home to find a stable job. Perhaps I’m rebellious or overly ambitious, but I refused to conform and stayed to carve out my own future, unaided. I’ve held various jobs, from warehouse worker to bank driver, accountant, and chief accountant, even working in utility aviation for a year.
Cristina Chiriac – Entrepreneur: To my family, selling blouses seemed beneath my dignity. There were family businesses I could have managed, but I felt a calling. For me, it was a rebirth and a chance to truly live.
