Petra Kvitova‘s recent triumph at the Doha tennis tournament against Spanish player Garbine Muguruza has catapulted her back into the WTA Top 10 rankings.
Just a year ago, Kvitova faced significant challenges, grappling with severe injuries sustained during a home invasion.
After being sidelined for the first half of 2017 to focus on her recovery, she saw her ranking plummet from 11th to 29th by the end of the year.
However, in recent months, the Czech star secured a victory at the St. Petersburg tournament and contributed to her team’s success in the Fed Cup against Switzerland.
Moreover, last week at the Qatar Total Open, she achieved an impressive feat by defeating four Top 10 WTA players in succession: Elina Svitolina, Julia Goerges, Caroline Wozniacki, and ultimately Garbine Muguruza in the final.
Remarkable Comeback: Kvitova’s Rise to the Top 10
As a result, Kvitova has surged from 21st to 10th in the WTA rankings, a remarkable achievement considering the difficulties she faced in 2017.
Garbine Muguruza also made strides, moving from 4th to 3rd place after reaching the final in Doha.
Romanian player Mihaela Buzarnescu has also seen a steady rise in the women’s tennis rankings. Last year at this time, she was ranked 457th, but after competing in her first Premier 5 tournament last week and defeating Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, she climbed from 43rd to 39th.
Another Romanian competitor, Monica Niculescu, improved her WTA ranking thanks to her participation in the Qatar Open. She managed to defeat Russian star Maria Sharapova in a thrilling three-set match, which, along with other successes this year, propelled her from 92nd to 75th place.
