„We refer to major depressive disorder when an individual experiences profound sadness, emotional pain, frequent feelings of guilt, regret, hopelessness, and worthlessness,” explains psychologist Keren Rosner from Mentarex Consult in Bucharest.
Common symptoms among those suffering from depression include insomnia and even physical pain. They may also experience apathy, crying spells, prolonged sleep, changes in appetite-either loss of interest in food or overeating-decreased sexual interest, and a lack of focus on previously enjoyed activities, often leading to social withdrawal,” adds the psychologist.
For adolescents and young adults, parental support is crucial. Parents should seek solutions without dramatizing life experiences.
Keren Rosner warns that unresolved issues can resurface. Individuals with depression are at a higher risk of suicidal thoughts, so it’s vital to take seriously anyone who frequently discusses self-harm or death.
