Global Wealth Trends: The Rise of Ultra High-Net-Worth Individuals
In 2018, a staggering 198,342 individuals worldwide possessed fortunes of $30 million or more, with only 215 of these residing in Romania, as reported by the Knight Frank Attitudes Survey. This elite group, known as Ultra High-Net-Worth Individuals (UHNWI), is projected to expand globally by up to 22% over the next five years, translating to an additional 43,000 individuals crossing the $30 million threshold. In Romania, the growth is even more pronounced, with an anticipated increase of 29%, positioning the country among those with the fastest growth rates.
Wealth Accumulation: A Global Perspective
According to the Knight Frank Attitudes Survey, a new millionaire emerges every 42 seconds globally. The category of High-Net-Worth Individuals (HNWI) is also significant in Romania, where over 9,500 individuals in Bucharest alone had assets of $1 million or more in 2018. Flora Harley, a senior analyst at Knight Frank’s Residential Research Department, notes that this number is expected to rise to over 12,000 by 2023, with three new HNWIs appearing daily in Romania.
Factors Driving Wealth Growth in Romania
Harley attributes the projected 30% increase in individuals with over $1 million in assets in Romania over the next five years to sustained economic growth and the positive trajectory of local asset values, including real estate. The global UHNWI population saw a modest 4% increase last year, down from 10% in 2017, largely due to „national and international frictions.” In Romania, the UHNWI count rose by 5% in 2018, reaching 215 individuals.
Global Economic Influences
In Europe, particularly the UK, Brexit dominated discussions in 2018, creating political and economic uncertainties. However, the potential for a Brexit agreement appears more likely as negotiations extend into October. Additionally, the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China has contributed to investor uncertainty, despite initial positive market trends earlier in the year. The slowdown in the Chinese economy also raises concerns, although it showed unexpected growth at the end of Q1.
Survey Insights and Wealth Growth Projections
The Knight Frank Attitudes Survey in Romania was based on responses from 600 private bankers and asset managers, representing nearly 70,000 UHNWI with a combined wealth exceeding $3 trillion. Their wealth increased by an average of 63% last year, while the global UHNWI population grew by only 4%. Projections for 2019 suggest a steady global wealth increase of 64%, with North America expected to see the highest growth rate at 81%.
Romania’s Position in the Global Wealth Landscape
Looking ahead to 2018-2023, Romania ranks among the top ten countries worldwide for the fastest-growing UHNWI populations. Leading the pack are India (39%), the Philippines (38%), and China (35%), followed by Indonesia (32%), Malaysia (31%), Vietnam (31%), Ukraine (30%), Romania (29%), and Thailand (29%).
UHNWI Density in Major Cities
When examining UHNWI density, Monaco tops the list with one UHNWI for every 174 residents, followed by Geneva (1 in 440) and Frankfurt (1 in 1,297). Other cities with high concentrations of individuals with $30 million or more include Zurich (1 in 1,359), Singapore (1 in 1,583), Luxembourg (1 in 1,729), Düsseldorf (1 in 2,413), Hong Kong (1 in 2,471), Auckland (1 in 2,541), and Oslo (1 in 2,652).
