Celebrating a Century: Romania’s New Silver Coin
On April 1, 2019, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) will introduce a commemorative silver coin to honor the centenary of Romania’s adoption of the Gregorian calendar.
Specifications of the Coin
This unique coin has a face value of 10 lei and is crafted from silver, featuring a diameter of 37 mm and a weight of 31.103 grams. The BNR plans to release a limited edition of 300 such coins into circulation.
Design Features
One side of the coin showcases the portraits and names of two pivotal figures in Romanian history: King Ferdinand I and Prime Minister Ion I.C. Brătianu, who were instrumental during the period when Romania transitioned to the Gregorian calendar.
The coin also features the inscription, „The adoption of the Gregorian calendar is approved by us,” along with the date transformation from April 1, 1919, to April 14, 1919. Additionally, it includes the title of the legislative act, „Decree-Law 1053/1919,” the inscription „ROMÂNIA” in an arc, the nominal value „10 LEI,” the national coat of arms, and the year of issue, „2019.”
Astronomical Significance
The reverse side of the coin depicts an astronomical clock, accompanied by the circular inscription „100 YEARS SINCE THE ADOPTION OF THE GREGORIAN CALENDAR.”
A Collector’s Treasure
This coin is a remarkable addition for any collector. Each silver coin is securely packaged in a transparent acrylic capsule and comes with a presentation brochure available in Romanian, English, and French. These brochures include a certificate of authenticity, featuring the signatures of the BNR governor and the central cashier.
