Financial Insights from the Recent European Parliament Election Campaign
During the recent electoral campaign for the European Parliament, news outlets collectively earned over half a million euros each. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) emerged as the largest spender, while the USRL PLUS 2020 Alliance allocated a budget that was 20 times less than that of PSD.
Estimating Campaign Expenditures
The financial estimates regarding party expenditures on television channels were derived from monitoring the frequency of campaign advertisements, the presence of political parties, and the publicly declared rates by TV stations to the National Audiovisual Council (CNA). Insights were also gathered through discussions with media and advertising professionals, as well as individuals involved in the electoral campaigns.
Television Channels Involved in the Campaign
Six television channels aired electoral advertisements, hosted paid programs, and broadcast live rallies funded by political parties: B1 TV, Realitatea TV, Antena 3, România TV, Digi 24, and National TV.

- National TV lagged behind the other news stations but was the only generalist channel to participate in the electoral campaign, earning nearly 140,000 euros.
