Promoting Financial Literacy: Global Money Week 2019 Initiatives
The Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) is set to host a series of events aimed at enhancing financial education among children and youth during Global Money Week, taking place from March 25 to March 31, 2019.
Kickoff Event at the Bucharest Stock Exchange
The inaugural event of GMW gathered numerous students at the Bucharest Stock Exchange, where they participated in the opening of the trading session. The students engaged in an educational activity designed as a game, which aimed to clarify concepts related to the stock market, economic situations of companies, and how these factors influence stock prices.
Importance of Financial Education
Leonardo Badea, President of ASF, emphasized, „Financial education has become a crucial focus for our organization, and I am confident that our programs will yield positive outcomes for students over time. Early education fosters informed consumers and lays the groundwork for the healthy development of financial markets.”
Goals of ASF During GMW
The objectives of ASF for the GMW events primarily include raising awareness about the significance of financial education and its role in the economic development of the country. The initiative aims to improve access to financial knowledge for children and youth, enhance financial inclusion, familiarize them with real market activities, and establish connections with financial professionals through job shadowing. Additionally, it seeks to actively involve market associations and consumer protection groups in promoting the necessity of financial education.
National Financial Education Projects
National financial education initiatives led by ASF, the National Bank of Romania, and the Ministry of National Education significantly contributed to Romania receiving the Country Award for the Europe and Central Asia region in 2017. This accolade was presented in Berlin by Child & Youth Finance International (CYFI), the organizer of GMW and a prominent global NGO.
Scope of the Financial Education Program
For the 2018-2019 academic year, ASF’s financial education program encompasses 140 educational institutions across 31 counties and Bucharest, with an estimated participation of over 18,000 students. Furthermore, the Academic Laboratory program, aimed at enhancing financial education in higher education, will involve more than 10 university centers nationwide.
Global Money Week: A Worldwide Initiative
Global Money Week is an international event where entire communities collaborate to foster better financial literacy, eliminate outdated financial policies, and equip young people with the tools and inspiration needed to shape their futures.
