Evolution of pension point value in Romania
In 2016, the pension point was valued at 871 lei. Critics often overlook the legal stipulations regarding pension adjustments, as the law does not specify a fixed date for these changes. It merely states that adjustments should occur annually, without indicating a specific month. Experts should recognize that the actual inflation rate is not determined at the start of the year.
Incremental Changes in Pension Values
On January 1, 2017, the pension point saw an increase of 5.25%, bringing its value to 917.5 lei. Acknowledging the ongoing need to support our elderly population, we have made significant strides. Contrary to the predictions of the National Liberal Party (PNL), we implemented another increase on July 1, 2017, raising the pension point by 9% to reach 1,000 lei.
Projected vs. Actual Pension Values
Had we adhered to the proposed linear adjustments from January 2017 through December 2018, the pension point would have been set at 970.7 lei by January 1, 2018, as suggested by PNL. However, the actual value was maintained at 1,000 lei. This amount was intended to remain until the end of 2018, despite opposition claims. Instead, we opted for another increase on July 1, 2018, which raised the pension point to 1,100 lei, implemented six months ahead of schedule.
Future Projections for Pension Points
According to Marius Budăi, starting September 1, 2019, the pension point will be adjusted to 1,265 lei. While some believe we should have maintained the 1,045 lei value until the end of 2019, we are moving forward with the new figure of 1,265 lei, effective from September.
