New Developments in Romania’s Armored Vehicle Production
The announcement was made by Gabriel Les, the Minister of National Defense, revealing that the Bucharest Mechanical Plant is set to manufacture 197 units of the Piranha 5 armored personnel carriers.
Key Program for Military Enhancement
„We have frequently discussed the execution of a crucial program aimed at equipping the Romanian Army – the 8×8 Armored Personnel Carrier initiative. At the beginning of 2018, we signed a contract with GDELS-Mowag for the procurement of 227 vehicles and their derivatives based on the Piranha 5 platform, along with initial logistical support. According to the agreement, while the first 30 units will be assembled in GDELS-Mowag’s facilities in Switzerland, the remaining 197 will be produced locally at the Bucharest Mechanical Plant,” stated Minister Les.
Inspection of Production Facilities
Gabriel Les, alongside the Minister of Economy, Niculae Bădălău, visited the Bucharest Mechanical Plant to assess the progress of the assembly lines for the military vehicles.
Current Status and Future Prospects
„We also discussed the first eight vehicles from the contract, which have already arrived in the country after assembly in Switzerland. We reviewed the timelines for completing testing and evaluation activities, as well as the factory acceptance procedures for all products scheduled for delivery to the Ministry of National Defense this year. We hope the manufacturer can soon catch up with the established delivery schedule,” Les added.
Delivery Timeline and Challenges
The initial batch of 36 vehicles was expected to be delivered within a maximum of 12 months following the contract signing.
„However, we are experiencing delays, and we are still within the 60-day window during which the company could fulfill the delivery. After this period, penalties outlined in the contract will be enforced. The Ministry of National Defense has already paid a 30% advance on the contract amount, for which the supplier has provided a bank guarantee,” Les further explained.
