Ce am învățat de la o persoană cu Sindromul Down?

Celebrating World Down Syndrome Day: Embracing Humanity
On March 21, we observe World Down Syndrome Day. But why is it essential to step into their world and understand their experiences? Because we need reminders that kindness, honesty, and innocence are not mere words; they can manifest through individuals.
Personal Encounters: A Transformative Project
Last month, I initiated a project that allowed me to meet four remarkable women with disabilities. Each of them brought unique life experiences, demonstrating that ignoring reality is no longer an option. Failing to acknowledge the truth is a betrayal, and rejecting those who are different from us is a form of dehumanization, shares Gabriela Călițoiu.
Lessons from Anca: A Journey of Understanding
One of these women is Anca, a young individual with Down syndrome, a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21. In the few hours we spent together, she imparted invaluable lessons about life, humanity, and sincerity, Gabriela reflects.
„Before meeting Anca, I had never interacted with anyone with this condition. I was filled with preconceived notions about how to behave or what to say. However, all my anxieties vanished with our first handshake when she introduced herself confidently as ‘Anca Miron,'” Gabriela recalls.
Anca’s Vibrant Life
„I go to the center, do gymnastics, folk dance, fitness, swim, and rollerblade,” Anca enthusiastically shares in one breath.
The Power of Unconditional Love
„What sets Anca apart for me is her boundless love for people. She embraced me without uttering a word, leaving me momentarily speechless. I couldn’t remember the last time someone had done that for no reason,” Gabriela reflects.
„She taught me the importance of expressing my feelings more openly and telling people I love them. As I was leaving, she hugged me tightly again and said, ‘Thank you so much, Ms. Gabi,'” Gabriela recounts.
A Call for Acceptance
Gabriela expresses a wish that when parents are asked by their children if they can play with a girl who has Down syndrome, they won’t react as if she carries a contagious illness. „I’m not an idealist trying to paint a utopian society; I’m advocating for a state of normalcy. These individuals are part of our community, whether we choose to accept it or not. They are just like us-filled with emotions, anxieties, joys, and sorrows. They should not be stigmatized or reduced to a single characteristic. We have so much to learn from them, and we should be grateful for every opportunity to connect,” Gabriela concludes.
