Electric Transport Initiatives Across Romanian Cities in 2019

In 2019, several Romanian cities, including Bucharest, Cluj, Iasi, Suceava, Targu Mures, and Tulcea, are making significant strides in adopting electric transportation.

Expansion of Electric Buses

Nearly 500 electric buses are set to hit the roads nationwide, with some already in operation. Bucharest aims to establish the largest fleet of electric public transport vehicles, having signed a contract for 100 electric buses. Timisoara follows closely with 44 electric buses, while Cluj rounds out the top three with 41.

In Bucharest, contracts have been finalized for the procurement of 100 electric buses and 80 trams, totaling 11 contracts valued at €233 million, funded through the Regional Operational Program 2014-2020.

Regional Developments in Electric Transport

Electric buses will also be introduced in Iasi, Piatra Neamt, Targu Mures, and Tulcea. In May 2019, the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration initiated a tender for 70 electric buses, with contracts amounting to €33 million. Iasi will receive 24 electric buses, along with 24 slow charging stations and 7 fast charging stations. Neamt will acquire 21 electric buses, 21 slow charging stations, and 7 fast charging stations. Targu Mures will see 15 electric buses, supported by 15 slow charging stations and 5 fast charging stations, while Tulcea will have 10 electric buses, 10 slow charging stations, and 3 fast charging stations.

Cluj-Napoca’s Electric Fleet Growth

This year, Cluj-Napoca will increase its electric bus count to 41. The initial 11 electric buses, funded by Swiss resources, began operations in 2018, coinciding with the introduction of 60 Mercedes-Benz Conecto Euro 6 buses. An additional 30 electric buses, financed through European funds, are expected to commence service this year, according to local reports.
